Homemade Hop Water (Recipe)

1–2 minutes

read

We grow hops in our yard and this year our crop went bananas! Of course, this was also the year we sold all of our homebrewing equipment. Homebrewing (and the required sanitation) was so much work and I was never happy with the way our projects turned out, plus being almost 3 years sober I kind of lost interest in that.

Enter… hop water!

We love the various bottled hop waters that are available, but they are so expensive. So we decided to try to make some hop water concentrate that we could mix up at home using our SodaStream carbonator.

Homemade Hop Water Recipe

What you need:

  • 2 quarts Water
  • 30 grams Hops (we used Cascade, available at homebrewing stores)
  • 1 fresh Lemon

Method:

  • Bring the water to a boil, then let it cool to 170 degrees.
  • Squeeze in the lemon juice.
  • Add the hops, stir, and let steep for 20 minutes.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer (you can also use cheesecloth or a nut milk bag if there is a lot of fine sediment).
  • Cool completely in the fridge.
  • The final product is your Hop Water Concentrate.

To serve (Recipe for 16 oz):

  • Measure 1/4 cup Hop Water Concentrate into a glass.
  • Top with 12 oz sparkling water (we used plain, but I think a citrus flavored water would also be amazing!)

Feel free to increase or decrease the amount of concentrate to reach your preferred flavor.

If you try this recipe, I’d love to hear what you think! Tell me how yours turned out, and if you made any modifications -so I can try them for myself 🙂
